FRACTAL UNIVERSE CALENDAR 2010 : Frequently Asked Questions
The submission process is now OPEN. Deadline for submissions is May 10, 2008. These FAQs will assist those considering submitting artwork for the 2010 calendar. Please pay careful attention to the FAQS below, which explain the submission process in detail, and include information about the preparation of your images - such as file size, format etc. If you have a query that is not answered on this page, please use the Enquiry form to contact Panny. Before Submitting Your Images: Q: The process: how does it work? A: For the last few years Avalanche Publishing, based in California, has published the Fractal Universe ® wall calendar. In recent years, a mini-wall calendar has also been produced, but this is not a guarantee. Printed credit is given for each individual artist whose work appears in the calendar, as well as the artist's website address and / or email address. A fractal calendar for the year 2010 is now planned, and Panny Brawley will work alongside the publisher regarding the artwork submissions process as editor. We would like to stress that while this is a wonderful opportunity for the fractal community as a whole, this is *not* a contest. The publisher will choose images that it sees as most commercially viable. Approximately 200 images will be chosen for submission to the publisher. From those 200 images, the publisher will select a final 13 images for the calendar. The publisher will then notify the individual artists that their image has been chosen. From that point on, the individual artists will work directly with the publisher in providing high resolution images, signing contracts, and receiving payment. PLEASE NOTE: The publisher very specifically requests that individual artists do not contact it directly. The fractal artists are asked to submit their selections directly to us. If you have any questions about the submission process, please contact Panny, via this website, for answers. After the publishing team has selected the final 13 images, then it will work directly with the individual artists. Q: Will all of the images I submit be sent on to the publisher for selection? A: Probably not. We received in the region of 640 entries from 80 fractal artists around the world for the 2009 calendar, and approximately 200 were sent on to the publisher. It is not impossible, but highly unlikely, that all 10 images of any one artist will be included. We try to include as much variety as possible, and produce a calendar that is commercially viable. . If you choose not to participate because you think you have insufficient experience as an artist to make it into the calendar, please reconsider. In the past Avalanche has included many images from artists who are have only been creating fractals for a short period of time. This year, Avalanche Publishing has again agreed to include at least one image from the editor in the final 13, in recognition of efforts as otherwise uncompensated editor / facilitator. It will choose which images will be included. The editor’s submitted image will be in addition to the 200. The list of the 200 images sent to the publisher for final selection will not be made public. Q: How will I know if my artwork has been accepted for the calendar? A: Once the publisher has made its selection of the 13 images to be included in the 2010 calendar, it will email the creators of those images personally. This will probably take place sometime between June and August 2008. When we have been notified of the selections, we will also post an announcement on this website, and to the major fractal art mailing lists and newsgroups. Artists whose images are not chosen will not be notified on an individual basis. Q: If my artwork is accepted for publication, what will my payment be? A: In previous years Avalanche paid the artists a one-time payment of $200 US per image, and $400 US for the front cover image, as well as supplying several complimentary copies of the calendar to each successful artist. The final contract between the creators of the 13 chosen images and the publisher will be presented soon after the high resolution image is received by the publisher. Historically payment for the images may be as late as the release date of the calendar (Summer 2009). Q: When will the calendar be published? A: It is hoped that the calendars will be published and available in the shops and on-line by July 2009, and certainly no later than October 2009. Q: I have some additional questions. How do I get answers? A: First, please read through all the FAQs set out on this page. We hope you will find that your questions have already been anticipated and answered. If not, please contact us. We will try to answer you personally, and add your question with it's answer to this page - here. Where necessary, we will contact the publisher on your behalf for clarification.. Content of Your Submission: Q: What type of fractal imagery are the editors looking for? A: In the past, the publisher's choice of fractals has been very eclectic. However, the publisher has made a point to request colorful, pleasing images. In respect of color, texture and other artistic interpretation of the images you submit, you must decide. That being said, please make sure that your artwork contains recognisable fractal shapes or forms. Avalanche already publishes a large range of other calendars which include landscapes, flowers, animals, etc. It wants to publish a fractal calendar, not another calendar depicting landscapes, flowers, animals ... Q: May I use any fractal-generating software for my artwork? A: Yes. You may use any fractal software you choose, as long as you are able to produce a final image of 4200x4200, CMYK color in tif format, and with a resolution of 350 ppi for final printing, burned onto a cd or uploaded (if the publisher agrees) directly to the Avalanche site. Please make sure that you will be able to produce a final image that meet these specifications for the publisher almost immediately after notification. Q: May I use post-processing? A: Yes. You may use graphics software for finishing / processing your fractal artwork. Just remember, this is a fractal calendar. Frames or other images inserted as additional layers, post-process texturing etc of your fractal image, may make your submission less desirable as a "fractal" in the eyes of the editors or the publisher. Q: May I submit digital, or other, artworks that do not include fractal elements? A: No. The calendar is very specifically for fractal art, only. Q: Do I need to submit the parameter sets for my artwork? A: No. Neither the editors nor the publisher require the parameter sets. Technical Details of Your Submission: Q: What aspect ratio should I use for my artwork? A: Your artwork must be square (600x600 pixels for the initial entries, and 4200x4200 pixels for the selected images for publishing). The small images must be a true representation of the large ones. Q: Which format should my submitted artwork take? A: Each initial entry must be in jpg, jpeg or png format, 600x600 pixels, and under 300kb. No other format or size will be accepted. If you have more than one entry to submit, please include them all in one submission and, if possible, zip them. Please also make absolutely sure you will be in a position to quickly supply the high resolution image file for printing, should one or more of your entries be accepted for the calendar: ie tif format, 4200x4200 pixels, CMYK color, 350 ppi, burned onto a cd. It may also be possible, if the Publisher agrees, to upload the final selections directly to the Pubisher's website.. Q: How should I name my jpg files? A: Please name them using your last name followed by underscore, your first name, underscore and 01 through 10, as needed, all in lower case, followed by underscore fc2010 For example: smith_john_01_fc2010.jpg smith_john_02_fc2010.jpg etc etc or bloggs_sue_01_fc2010.png bloggs_sue_02_fc2010.png etc etc Q: Should I include a title for my submitted artwork? A: No - there is no need to include a title for your artwork. If your work is selected by the publisher, you will be asked to provide a title. Q: How many images may I submit? A: You may submit between one and ten images, only, and all in one submission. Your first submission to us will be the only one accepted. Please do not submit your ten images, followed a week later by a request for us to disregard that submission as you have changed your mind and will be submitting different images. With the volume of images we are expecting, such a request will be impossible to honor. There is no benefit in being the first (or last!) artist to submit images. Q: How do I submit my artwork? A: Please follow the instructions on the SUBMIT page, and complete the form appropriately. Please do not send your entries directly to the publisher. Q: When is the closing date for submitting images? A: The closing date for submissions to us is the 10th May 2008. Under no circumstances will late entries be accepted. A CD with the final entries for selection will be sent by us to the publisher before the end of May 2008. Legal Stuff: Q: May I submit artwork on behalf of someone else? A: No - absolutely not! You may only submit your own original artwork, for which you own all of the copyrights. Q: May I submit artwork that has already been displayed elsewhere? A: Yes, provided it has not been published in another calendar, and provided you still hold the copyrights to the artwork. Q: Should I add a signature and copyright notice to my jpg files? A: If you wish you may add this to your 600x600 fractals, but please do so in a way that does not mar the quality of the image. Initial submissions to the editors or publisher will not be used for any purpose other than to make the final selection for the Fractal Universe Calendar 2010. By submitting images, you are agreeing that, if selected, your images will be used in the 2010 calendar, in marketing materials related to that calendar, and on these pages as examples of the 2010 calendar (credit will of course be given to you). The final, high resolution images may not include a signature, copyright symbol or any other text. That information will be added by the publisher under the published calendar image, not within it. Q: Will there be a contract? A: Yes. If one of your images is selected for the calendar, Avalanche Publishing will request that you supply the high resolution image almost immediately. (The laying out of marketing materials starts much earlier than that for the actual calendars.) Later, you will be presented with a contract, to be signed by you and returned to the publisher. The contract will simply set forth the terms under which you permit the publisher to publish your image in its calendar. Additional Questions & Answers: Q: Will artwork, other than that submitted to you via this website, be considered for inclusion for the calendar? A: Yes - possibly. In the past, Avalanche Publishing has requested specific fractals or fractal types. Special requests of individual artists may be made by approaching them directly. Q: I would like to post my images on a public website (eg deviantART / Renderosity) prior to submitting them for the calendar - is this OK? A: Yes - it is fine to do this. You may also post them on your own website if you wish. The only restriction for published work applies to images that have been previously published in *printed calendars* - these may *not* be submitted. Q: Is is permissible to submit flame fractals? A: Yes - please do! The state of flame images/rendering has made this a great opportunity. Just be certain that you are able to follow your submission up with a rendered image that is 4200 x 4200 pixels in case your image is chosen for the calendar. This also applies to "scene" images created using fractal flames. | |||
